Stone Island covers about 1,100 acres on the northwest shore of Lake Monroe, where the St. Johns River opens wide. Moss-hung oaks shade quiet roads, open lawns run down to the water, and neighbors still wave from golf carts.
People have called this island home for thousands of years, from the earliest native settlers to William "Senator" Lawson, whose plan for the island still shapes it today.
